Perspective & The Empire State Buidling

by 97495429 February 10, 2014

If you follow along on Instagram, you might already know that I made the trip up to New York for Fashion Week this past Friday (more to come on that later!). The trip itself was kind of a whirlwind of amazing experiences for numerous reasons, but partially because I randomly decided on my journey up that I was going venture to the top of the Empire State Building that day, alone.

When I arrived in New York City I almost immediately spotted the towering building in all its Art Deco glory, and set off for it through the hustle and bustle of the city sidewalks. After waiting in the (luckily) short line, I rode the elevator up 80-something floors, my heart racing in anticipation. I knew I was about to experience something completely different from anything I ever had before.

When I stepped outside onto the observation deck my heart definitely skipped a beat. The view was truly unlike one I'd ever seen before. The light was absolutely perfect that day, and as I stood there and marveled at the stunning view of the man-made landscape in quiet, I started thinking about perspective. Here I was, in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world, during one of the busiest, most stressful times of the year, and by changing my physical perspective, it became calm, serene, and beautiful. Eighty-six floors below, the taxis were still racing by, the models were still strutting down runways, but I couldn't hear or see any of it. All the stress from my week melted away, and I was happy to be there, right in that moment.

I snapped a few pictures on my phone that just barely capture how beautiful the view was that day ...

While most of my stress this week was good stress, it was a cool little reminder that sometimes by simply changing your perspective, it is possible to escape the chaos/negativity/whatever you're going through, simply by making little changes either physically or mentally.

I even had a nice stranger take what is now one of my favorite pictures of myself (squinty eyes and all). If you have the chance to venture up there on your own, even if you've already been with a group, do it. There is something so satisfying about taking yourself on a little adventure, and gaining a little perspective eighty-six floors in the sky.

P.S. This time of year is apparently their slow season so the lines are really, really short. I didn't wait more than five minutes!
